Q&A with Naomi and Katie!

Hi hi! This week Katie and I are going to introduce ourselves through a series of Q&A! Here we go!

1. What is your personality type?
Katie: ISFJ (Introverted, Sensing, Feeling, Judging)
Naomi: ISTJ (Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Judging)
(find out your personality type here! http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp)

2. If you had to have a theme song that would play whenever you did something right, what would it be?
K: "Send Me On My Way" - Rusted Roots
N: "The Reckless and The Brave" - All Time Low

3. If you could be an animal, what would you be and why?
K: A koala because they sleep for 18-22 hours of the day. And I need sleep. A lot of it.
N: A sloth because no one can judge me for being lazy since it's in my nature :)

4. What is the craziest thing you have done at a church related function?
K: Drinking a cup of coffee, not drinking water, having a diet coke, and then being in the hot sun in Arizona was pretty crazy (& stupid). Drink your water on the rez!
N: Playing hide-and-seek in a hotel during 8th grade Tsunami...not the best idea.

5. If you could only eat one thing, what would that be?
K: Soup!
N: Apples! (preferably pink ladies or honey crisps)

6. What is your biggest regret from this past week?
K: My biggest regret is doing the wrong week's BSF homework. I was useless in small group.
N: Not checking my water bottle before putting it in my backpack yesterday. Everything became soaked :(

7. Finish this sentence: The world would be a better place without...
K: The world would be a better place without cilantro!
N: The world would be a better place without white hair from stress!

8. If you were given a time turner, what moment in life would you want to revisit and why?
K: I'd want to revisit that moment when I decided to do ballet and changed my mind to do gymnastics instead. Oh the regret.
N: I would want to go back to Korea and visit the trick eye museum! It's one of the wackiest museums I've ever been to.

9. What is one trend from the 90's that you would want to bring back?
K: Tamagotchis. Mine was pink and would not die.
N: Tamagotchis! I had over 5 when I was younger...

10. The one thing that perplexes me most about the Bible is...
K: Did the wives ever get jealous while their husbands had relations with their sister or maids with the purpose of procreation? I mean, that's pretty scandalous. There's no narrative about Sarah getting jealous, but it HAD to have happened, right?
N: How did Noah's sons become the fathers of different races if they all had the same father, Noah? They all came from the same background, yet they're all different.

We had lots of fun (as usual)!

ICYMI:

Tonight, we started off with our first MEAT OF THE YEAR!! YAY!! Find a freshman or junior who went and ask them how it went! (dinner was delish, provided by our favorite collegians) (BTW: Our next MEAT will be NOVEMBER 7 for SOPHOMORES & SENIORS | RSVP to Mel/Jonny)

David led us for prayer and we had community time with SAM (i don't know why... but this is one of those names you just capitalize)! If you came after community time, you were just-in time for JUSTIN TIME! (do you get it, heh) Justin shared about lessons of HiKoi and what HiKoi is about :) Then we had a time of worship with Dan! and went on to our SG's!

Hope you had a great Friday night! HiKoi MEMBERSHIP FORMS will be available this SUNDAY! Pick yours up ASAP! Deadline is JANUARY 30, 2015. TWENTY. FIFTEEN. If you would like more information on membership, find an officer or counselor and ask them all about it!

The Punniest Pairing

Hi guys this week’s blog is from Jacob Joe and Nathan Pun. As the prayer leader and the prayer leader's pairing, we decided to tell you stories from our past and connect with prayer request that you should pray for. Also, make sure you read all the way to the end.

Fondest Church Memory

Nathan: My fondest church memory was 2 years ago when I was in 8th grade and we had to run the maze for autumn festival. We made the maze very short, but it was pitch black with only a strobe light and wall that we were able to walk through. We also had Dylan Che dress up as slender man, which looked pretty real. As you can imagine, with Dylan as slender man and walls that we can walk through, the maze was horrifying. I won’t go into too much detail with the rest of the maze, but we made it a bit too scary. We made a couple kids cry.

Jacob: My one of the fondest moments for church for me was during Hi Koi. The Senior Honor Nights, now I pulling photos from my archive of FB photos of past themes.

Theme: Mary Poppins
We were the Chimney Men lol

Theme: Bon Voyage

Theme: Super Smash Bros
I’m an Ice Climber

Prayer Request: Pray for the children at our church. Pray for their spiritual growth and that they will have a stable foundation in God.

Favorite Camp or Wire Memory

Jacob: I’ll choose a WiRe memory… now, as you may know and I’m not the greatest writer in developing imagery and background information so I’ll answer with pictures, because a picture is worth a thousand words.

I’ll leave you with a picture of one time we had prime rib, now we all know the end pieces are the best because of the skin…so we got a little excited. I think my expression shows how delicious it was,

Nathan: My memory is also from WiRe. Since I have only gone to WiRe once, you could guess when this was. This was the first time my grade actually started talking to each other and hanging out WITH OUT BEING FORCED TO!!!!!! Whoa. I know. It was a big accomplishment for us. But, it was great seeing most of my grade just playing around at the playground and talking to each other for the first time.

Prayer Request: Pray for WiRe which will be coming up soon. Pray for good planning and that the speaker would really impact all of us.

Favorite High School Memory

Nathan: Drum line. I have to say my favorite memories from last year were from drum line. I love to perform in front of people and just doing something that is different. I remember just hanging out with my friends, talking, eating and sweating. There was a lot of practice involved, but it paid off because we got third place out of all of Southern California. Hopefully I can make even more memories this year performing in front of more people.

There are a lot of people in this picture, but that’s alright because I’m in the front.

Jacob: Cross Country and Track. Whether one would call running a sport, Cross Country and Track were my sports for 4 years. Now throughout my archives of photos, I couldn't find the defining photo of me on my sprinting form. As I would be coming in on the home stretch, people would always think I’d pass out because I would move my short arms moving like t-rex. Tilt my head to the left and looking up. Eyes would roll back. Terrible form, but I love the last 100 meters of a long distance race.

Here’s a picture of my marvelous running face.

Prayer Request: Pray for all the non-Christians at your school. Pray that you could show your friends who God is. Also, pray that you would be a stable Christian at school even when people start to question you.

What do you like to do?

Jacob: Sports. Anything really, watching or playing I just love every aspect of it. The strategy that comes into play, the techniques the athlete has to make the most efficient moves, and the disciple that is necessary that leads for success. If you want to talk about what sport you do, or debate about professional sports I am down to talk about it with you!

Nathan: Reading. I know that sounds weird, but I love reading when I’m bored. I also like to play pokémon. Pokémon is the best. I can’t wait for pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire to come out. I know I sound like a nerd, but I love pokémon, not the show but the video game. What else do I like to do hmmmmm……. Oh I know. I like to sleep and eat, which is what most of my grade does anyways.

Prayer Request: Pray over your hobbies. Pray that you would praise God in everything you do and that you would spend some time with God instead of doing what you like to do.

Best Jokes

Nathan: As you all know, my last name is pun. I don’t always tell puns, but I have some typed out. I hope you like them.

I tried to catch some fog. I misted.
Jokes about German sausage are the wurst.
A soldier who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran.
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.
This girl said she recognized me from the vegetarian club, but I’d never me herbivore.
I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. I can’t put it down.
I did a theatrical performance about puns. It was a play on words.
The doctor told me I had type A blood, but it was a type O.
I didn't like my beard at first. Then it grew on me.
When you get a bladder infection, urine trouble.
What does a clock do when it’s still hungry? It goes back four seconds.
I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me!
Broken pencils are pointless.
I was at the ATM and an old lady asked me to check her balance, so I pushed her over.
It was an emotional wedding. Even the cake was in tiers.
Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up on its own? Because it was two tired.
What do you call a cow that doesn't produce milk? An udder failure.

I also have some great stories to tell you if you ask me. If you already heard them, don’t ruin it for others.

Jacob: I don’t have any jokes to say. Nathan is the master of puns.

The first five people who comment their answers to the questions we answered will win an amazing prize. Tell us your fondest church memory; favorite camp or WiRe memory; favorite high school memory; what do you like to do; and your best jokes.

There and Back Again

Greetings HiKoi, our names are Enoch and Cyrus. As your devotions leader Cyrus I’ll be attempting to help you guys find the truth of what the Bible says and how you can find God in the words. As a counselor, Enoch, I'll be attempting to relate my out-of-touch experiences to your lives and try to stay young. It seems fitting then to respond to random questions about ourselves with riddles, so here they are:

What is your favourite body part?
Cyrus: Thirty white horses on a red hill,
  First they champ,
  Then they stamp,
  Then they stand still.

Enoch: While waking or resting
  Moving I remain
  Seldom stopping
  Always rapid

What would you want to get for your birthday?
  C: I am carried in a sack
But drink the water on me
  Children look with hopeful eyes
But kings want to hide me

E: A slip that is passed
Managed first by Chuck, now by Jan
Made of cloth, dyed to perfection
  By all sometimes sought
But now you’re all is the standard

How old are you?
C: I established direct election of senators by popular vote

E: When it always seems like one of those nights,
When this place is too crowded.
Too many cool kids, I ditch the whole scene and end up dreaming
  Instead of sleeping.

What is the meaning of life?
C: The knell of the bells at the Gion temple
Echoes the impermanence of all things.
The colour of the flowers on its double-trunked tree
Reveals the truth that to flourish is to fall.
He who is proud is not so for long,
Like a passing dream on a night in spring.
He who is brave is finally destroyed,
To be no more than dust before the wind.

E: Turn to the Writings, the section numbered
To the sum of the members in the greatest love fest of all
To where the preacher proclaims and the wise man speaketh
Within the place, where wisdom’s provided
To which all things else are as vanities contrasted

If you had to describe Hikoi with an animal, what would it be?
C: In groups I sleep
  Alone I am meek
  My tusks are dread
  Yet I do not tread

E: Like the grand old beast I ennoble
  Which towards donkeys are opposed
  Sometimes sluggish
  Sometimes wild
In the plains of two continent I roam

October 10 Small Groups!

In case you missed it :D

Just to remind you guys, we still meet at 7:00 for pre-Hikoi prayer I encourage you to come and pray for the night! Nathan started prayer by having us split up by our grade and gender. Then, we shared our prayer requests and prayed for one another. Are you taking Katie's challenge and asking people how you can pray for them?

We officially started the night with our first devotional time with Cyrus! He went over the seven deadly sins and how they will curse us. Nathan took over afterwards to lead us into prayer time. We split up into pairs and prayed for one another after sharing our own personal sins. Once we gathered together again, Naomi led a quick game of scattergories.

Finally, we got our official small groups for the year! yaaaaaay! I'll post the small group list below in case you weren't here or already forgot. To pick our small group rooms for the year, Naomi planned a crazy game full of trivia questions and nerf guns, tournament style... and it was good :D In the end, Joshua Yuan won in place of Ernest! Edwin came in second, Wendy third, Kristy fourth, Charmaine fifth, Nikki sixth, Nelson seventh, and in last place... Simeon (who ended up in the dungeon). Then, we headed off to our first night of small groups!

10 truths and 5 lies?

Hi friends! Sam here :) How well do you know your Hikoi secretary and her counselor? We thought that it would be fun to do something a bit different in our blog post this week. Instead of us just telling you about ourselves, you are going to have to figure out if what we say is true or false. (FCBC HiKoi does not promote lying ._.) So this is going to be like the game 2 truths and a lie... except it will be 10 truths and 5 lies! So how well do you really know the two of us?

Denise-
  1. I really like Chris Brown, despite what he did to Rihanna (#stopviolenceagainstwomen).
  2. Whenever an article of clothing has served me well and I decide I love it beyond compare, I cut off all the tags/labels on it to "immortalize" it. One such item is my dad's old cashmere sweater.
  3. I have ridden a giraffe in Kenya.
  4. I used to drink straight-up cups of just boba in middle school.
  5. I am allergic to mollusks, but only one: snails. I discovered this when eating escargot with my family at a French restaurant and got hives and couldn't breathe. The most upsetting thing was we missed out on creme brulee because we had leave and tend to my allergy.
  6. When I was a kid, I once threw up Lucky Charms and my vomit was rainbow colored.
  7. I have a medical conditional wherein I produce more male hormones that the average female.
  8. One of the dumbest moments in my life is when I asked a Chinese grandma to check in my baggage for me (I was running late to my flight and for some reason thought it'd be easier to have a stranger do it for me). I actually went all the way through security before I realized my stupidity/mental breakdown and ran back out to find her. I missed my flight.
  9. I hate milk.
  10. I'm not a Christian (I hope the answer for this is obvious).
  11. I haven't always been bossy. In kindergarten everyone loved playing house with me because I would always play the submissive baby.
  12. My favorite fruit of all time is white nectarine. In the summer I eat two or three a day, and I like eating them whole so the juice can run down my arms.
  13. My runner-up Bible crush is Luke, because he's a doctor and disciple, which is pretty much the perfect combo.
  14. Running in the rain is one of the ways I am reminded that I am His.
  15. I have an aversion to pork chops due to a bad DTR involving some very dry ones.
Sam-

  1. I once shaved off some skin while I was trying to shave my legs. It was like a carrot peeler.
  2. One time while I was dancing, I fell and dislocated my knee. When my teacher came to check up on me, she popped my knee back into place and I never went to the hospital or a doctor.
  3. When I got baptized, I forgot to close my eyes when I went under the water so I had water in my eyes until I got out of the baptistry.
  4. This summer, I had a total of 21 bug bites. They itched.
  5. I watched a performance done by the American Ballet Theatre this summer and fell asleep during a whole dance.
  6. I’ve been to the Grammy’s and sat in floor seats. I was super close to really famous people.
  7. I can’t eat those popping boba things you add to your frozen yogurt because it reminds me of popping a pimple in my mouth.
  8. I drink two gallons of milk each week by myself.
  9. I once saw Xiumin and Kris from EXO at the airport in a van. They were in LA for a concert and about to leave and I was at the airport dropping off a family member.
  10. I have never been to Disneyland in my life. I’ve gone to Disney World once when I was a wee little baby, but never since.
  11. Back when I used to take PE and actually run, I ran a 7:30 mile pretty easily. I don’t think I can do that anymore…
  12. I like the taste of water. Most people say that water doesn’t have a taste, but water does.
  13. I can read the korean alphabet. One of my friends taught me in our free time in english class last year.
  14. I love to play just dance.  My favorite dance is The Way.
  15. I once tripped down an escalator that was going up.

Whaaaa~ Denise and I either have some crazy stories or are really good at making things up! What do you think are the lies in here? You can comment below, comment on facebook, or ask us in person and we'll be able to tell you what true and whats not. :D

And to make this post a bit more fun, we are going to add a few pictures of ourselves ^-^

Oh gosh... the Li family
My personal favorite

Look I have no bangs :D
... thanks Hikoi

Uhhhh Denise... You okay there?
Someone looks really comfortable :)
Model Status
We all need to be a bit more like Denise

October 3 UNVEILED

In case you missed it :D

We started the night with prayer led by Nathan. We practiced using the one sentence that can make our prayer lives better by asking: "How can I pray for you?" Then, community time was led by Melissa. After introducing ourselves, we said what we would want to change about this past week and our pet peeves. In our community time groups, we played a game to get to know our counselors better. By the way, Chris doesn't like grainy watermelon and Dan has wavy hair :O crazy, right?

Afterwards, Jonny unveiled the theme for the 2014-2015 HiKoi year and it was good. :) haha get it? "Unveiled"? The theme focuses on how we all cover ourselves with a veil to hide our sin and shame, but we should take off our veil to expose ourselves and be honest. The theme verse is Psalm 80:18-19 which says:
"Then we shall not turn back from You; revive us, and we will call upon Your name. O Lord God of hosts, restore us; cause your name to shine upon us and we will be saved."

Then, we headed off to our last night of pseudo groups. I'm not so sure how other groups went, but Wendy's "newlywed" game was spicy XD If you are ever looking for that special someone, Denise can use her amazing matchmaking gift to find your match. Nelson's group played King Elephant, challenging the coordination skills in everyone. Simeon led a game of Ping Pong Question which seems like it involves a lot of interrogations. Nikki brought out the chinese in all of us by leading a chopstick relay. Ernest's group played with words in a game of Adverbs. Charmaine's packing tape game sounds half dangerous and half hilarious. Kristy's group played Banana Pass, which sounds like it was super fun. Edwin's group made people turn against each other as they tried to discover the assassin among them in Assassin Wink. To end the night, every group had food. and who doesn't like food?

Make sure to come on Friday as we go deeper into what being "unveiled" means and have our first week of small groups!

Two Pears in a Blog

Hi Hi!!

This week, Ashley and I decided to combine our two posts and answer random questions! For reference, Big Pear is Ashley, and Little Pear is me--Melissa. Okay, here we go!!

What is your spirit animal?
Ashley - Definitely sloth. They are resilient animals that know how to conserve energy.

Melissa - a puppy!! They are super cute, friendly, and dogs are very loyal animals. (have you watched hachi)

What is your drink of choice?
Ashley - At half&half, I get honeydew milk tea w/ boba, half sweet. I also enjoy toffeenut iced lattes at Starbucks, half sweet. Always half sweet! Or default water.

Melissa - Well, following Big Pear, at half and half, my go-to is the iced milk with boba, pudding, and chocolate! Starbucks is usually my choice of drink, tho!! I love their Green Tea Latte/Frap w/ 6 scoops matcha and caramel walls! Water’s good too...

What emoji best describes you?
Ashley - I feel like his face is applicable for many emotions/situations.

Melissa -  This face describes my senior year! I try to sleep whenever I get the chance because I never know when I will have to stay up!
ios_emoji_sleeping_face.png

What song are you feeling right now?
Ashley - Rather Be by Clean Bandit. It makes me want to close my eyes and not think about life.

Melissa -I Can’t Wait by Hilary Duff. (yes. so old. but so good) I basically can’t wait to finish college apps!

What is your kryptonite/weakness?
Ashley - Men with voices of butter (Sam Smith)

Melissa - perfectly shaped eyebrows.

What are a few of your favorite things?
Ashley - Rompers, lace, & preserved meats.

Melissa - watermelon, Starbucks, selfies, decorating things, sweaters, high-res. photos, & watches
two of my many, many fav things!!

What makes you laugh?
Ashley - My dad. And simple stupidity- like memes/gifs.

Melissa - Buzzfeed posts. For example, today I read a post about a woman buying a loaf of toast and she complained that she had to toast the bread herself. check it out: http://www.buzzfeed.com/nicholaswray/classic-wollies#9wghxz

hmu if you want a good laugh!

What is the highlight of your week so far?
Ashley - I signed up for the Leukemia Walk which is on my birthday! So I'm super excited for that.

Melissa - OOOOH. I got to hang out with FCBC people at Gab after school (and Dan!!!)! I really enjoy getting to spend time with the underclassmen and catching up with them during school!! (Thanks Dan, for the drink!)

What are you most excited for Hi Koi this year?
Ashley - I'm really excited for the theme and what it entails. I think it's applicable for not just the high schoolers, but us as counselors. I think Jonny has a great vision and I can't wait for it to be unveiled! Also, I'm peared up with the best pearing. (SHOUT OUT M.CHOW)!

Melissa - I am super excited for SG! I think that small groups are where we grow the most and can encourage one another!! Also SUPER DUPER EXCITED to serve with Big Pear! If you see us around, say hi to us! We love meeting new people!

What was your favorite HiKoi memory?

Ashley - Senior Honor Nights were always fun. My favorite was my sophomore year when my friends and I dressed up as the Spice Girls. The theme was I <3 the 90’s. Hopefully you can tell which spice we were..
shn2007_063.jpg

Melissa - My favorite memory would be during SG's my sophomore year in High School when we shared our Hi/Lo of the week and Kington shared the funniest story of all time and none of us could stop laughing!!

sorry, bad quality....
What is your all time favorite TV show?

Melissa - I LOVE NETFLIX. Let's just put that out there! My favorite TV show would definitely be SCANDAL. What is there not to love about that show? (well actually, I can think of somethings.. but not the point!!) I absolutely love the plots and characters, some make you laugh, others make you want to give them a hug every time you see them.

Ashley - I as well LOVE NETFLIX! I am currently rewatching The Office, which is classic. IMHO they should’ve stopped when Steve Carell left ..  Also Breaking Bad was just genius.
If you could spend the day with one person, who would you spend it with and what would you do?

Melissa - If I could spend the day with one person I would spend it with my Mom and we would fly to NY and walk in Central Park and window shop on Fifth Avenue/Madison Avenue and go to a trendy cafe for lunch and have dinner at Halal Guys(best food in NYC, google it)

Ashley - I would spend a day with Jeremy Lin. He would romantically teach me how to play basketball. And then we would talk about all our common interests over boba and noodles. And then we would pray because God would be the center of our relationship.

Would you rather eat with your feet that you can never wash for the rest of your life or eat a bottle of deodorant for the rest of your life?

Melissa - I would rather eat with my feet for the rest of my life because how can you swallow deodorant.. It's like biting on powder/gel that your pits smell like…

Ashley - This is such an odd question .. But I would eat with my feet. Because there are people with no hands and they have to eat with their feet, and they are actually Very handicapable! And if you think about it, hands are probably just as dirty as feet. soo..

What are three things you use on a daily basis?

Melissa - 1. mah trusty iPhone; 2. my pink agenda; 3. my 32-oz pink water bottle (as you can tell, I like pink a lot.. although its not my favorite color..)
Ashley - phone, chapstick, and water canteen!

If you had a one time use credit card that would be paid by some unknown benefactor, what would you buy?

Melissa - A PREMIUM DISNEYLAND PASS <3 because I absolutely love Disneyland and I would spend all my free time there!!
so this is obviously not an annual pass.
But this was the last time I went to Disneyland :)
Ashley - A plethora of french bulldogs that would ALL BE MINE !

Hope you enjoyed reading our answers!! Do you have more questions for us? Comment below, or ask us when you see us!! See you at Hikoi!!
